Bari to Alberobello: How to Travel?

The Trulli of Alberobello is one of the most famous attractions in Puglia. It’s a must-see for every traveler. Bari on the other hand is a popular base to explore the region. It’s only natural that many tourists are interested in the Bari to Alberobello trip.

When you are planning a trip from Bari to Alberobello there are a few things to consider. Do you want to do a guided tour or you will go on your own? Will you rent a car or use public transport? Is it possible to visit via taxi? Let’s explore all the options to help you decide what’s best for your itinerary.

We’ll take a look at all the options separately and we’ll help you by highlighting the positives and negatives of each choice.

Guided Tour from Bari to Alberobello

One of the most convenient ways to visit Alberobello from Bari is via a guided tour. When choosing such a tour you won’t have to worry about anything other than making an appearance at the pick-up spot.

You will be transported and guided around the UNESCO World Heritage Site with some free time to explore on your own. It’s a great choice if you want to go with a well-prepared guide who can tell you everything about the history and significance of the trulli in Alberobello.

A little downside of picking a guided tour is that it’s touristy. We know that some people try to avoid going on touristy trips and we are among these people. Regardless, we enjoyed the streamlined experience of a guided tour when we first visited. It was surprisingly pleasant and less touristy than what we expected.

You can either book online in advance or try to consult the local tour companies. The first option is a great choice if you want to ensure you have a spot on the tour and the latter is great if you can haggle for some great prices.

Visiting Alberobello via Public Transport

The obvious budget option is a visit on your own. Of course, in this case, you won’t have a tour guide to look after you but you will instead have the freedom to explore.

There are multiple choices when you want to travel from Bari to Alberobello via the Italian public transport system.

On one hand, there is the regional train which runs from Bari to Taranto. There are multiple trains each day but in most cases, you will need to do one change at Putignano. It’s not terribly convenient but not the end of the world either.

There are also buses running between the two cities. You may be able to catch a direct line but we recommend online booking for that. Then you can combo the options: take a bus to Putignano and then continue via train to Alberobello.

You can book tickets at https://www.fseonline.it/ but it’s all in Italian and a little bit confusing. You might be better off by purchasing tickets at the train station the day before.

We’ve found it easier to use a service like Omio where the UI is English and it’s easier to book online.

If you are someone who doesn’t mind driving in Italy or maybe you have already rented a car then this option is for you. Renting a car is usually more expensive than public transport but you can adjust your itinerary better.

You can include multiple stops and visit other locations that are simply not possible via public transport. Even better, rental car prices in Puglia are pretty good. You can grab some great deals. Due to the cheap pricing, this is an option you definitely need to consider.

Reaching Alberobello by car from Bari is very painless. The main road called Strada Statale 117 cuts right through Alberobello. All you have to do is follow this road.

Parking is almost always paid, in Alberobello. There are some zones in the city that are far away from the center and the UNESCO Heritage Site where it’s free but you got to make a lot of effort to find them. These spots are for locals anyway.

We recommend the paid parking lots as the hourly rate of public parking is very expensive. Most parks will cost anything from 6 to 10 euros for a full day. Be careful as some parks operate with an hourly rate as well, we advise you to avoid those.

Bari to Alberobello Taxi

You might find this surprising but even a taxi option is available. Although if we are honest this might be the most expensive option. At least in terms of value. However, you can consider it if, for example, you want to get from the airport straight to Alberobello.

It’s a valid option after all. The taxi will pick you up anywhere in Bari and take you to Alberobello. We have not used this service but other travelers speak highly of EurotaxiPuglia. You can ask them for a quote for such a trip. Expect to pay anywhere between 70 to 140 euros depending on the season.
