How to get to Getaria, Spain?

Getaria is located on the Basque coastline. You’ve got two picks for airports if you are trying to fly directly to the town.

The first option is to book a cheap flight to Hondarribia. It’s the official airport of San Sebastian, the biggest town in the area. From San Sebastian, you can either do train or bus. These are okayish options, definitely note the easiest way to get to Getaria. If you want the most convenient way you should rent a car at the airport.

You can also choose Bilbao as your destination. Bilbao might see a better selection of flights throughout the year, however, it’s also a bit harder to get to Getaria from Bilbao. Once again, it will be best to renting a car at the airport and driving to Getaria yourself.

What are the best things to do in Getaria?

Now that you have arrived on the small islet of Getaria it’s time to immerse yourself in this charming town. You will already feel the salty air on your face and be able to smell the close sea.

The town of Getaria has a small but cute historic center. It’s lined with cobblestone streets and vendors on the side. This is where you should start your journey.

1. Explore the historic center

The major road N-634 passes through the town in Getaria. This major road marks the beginning of the cobblestone streets and historic buildings in the town.

No cards are allowed to take to these awesome narrow cobblestone streets and you should have a true walking experience. Make sure your camera is ready for taking pictures as you will see many colorful and old buildings.

Walking the small streets is the perfect time to do some window shopping. There are many vendors that line the street at the bottom of each residential buildings. From local artisans to local produce everything is on display. Just the perfect place to do some souvenir shopping.

2. San Salvador Eliza

The main church of the city is an impressive sight by itself. As you approach it on the small streets you will see it towering above the old town. Stop for a moment and imagine what a simple villager could feel during the middle ages as he approached the tower.

Without the power of the internet or free knowledge, this simple villager must have been stunned by the beauty that this church presents.

You can check it out from the inside as well. If there is no active service we urge you to go inside and marvel at all the beautiful decorations.

3. Aldamar Park

Passing through town you will arrive at a hilly area. This is called Aldamar Park and it is where the best views can be found.

As we’ve mentioned the town itself is located on a small islet. The park is at the top of the islet and there is only the sea after it.

It’s a small hike with views that would make an even bigger hike worth it. Looking back you will get the city and its old streets while all around you there is the Basque shoreline and the sea.

There is also a small abandoned building on the top that serves as a scenic spot.

4. The Beach

If the weather and your time permit then skipping a beach would be a mistake. During summer the water is pretty warm and suitable for a great swim.

The biggest beach in the area is Markobe Hondartza. It’s a huge stretch of sandy beach located right next to town. What’s awesome is that you will have the town of Gateria in the background for your beach photos. Needless to say, it’s a great backdrop!

Another beach you can choose from is Gaztetape. It’s famous for wild waters and surfing opportunities. This one is smaller and better suited for lovers of watersports.

5. Don’t miss the port and the fish market

Stroll along the rows of small fishing boats as you visit the port. It has an incredible atmosphere especially when fishermen are returning to the docks unloading their products.

If you want even more fishing to visit the local fish market. Be prepared for the heavy fish smell though. You can marvel at all the different creatures lurking under the water, all caught the day you see them.

6. Museo Cristóbal Balenciaga

An interesting things to do in Getaria is a visit to the Museo Cristóbal Balenciaga. It’s a very unique museum for fashion. Cristobal Balenciaga is a true local to Getaria. He was born in the town in 1895.

From these humble beginnings, he went on to earn himself a respected name in the fashion industry. Even today his name is fond for people interested in the fashion biz.

Opened in 2011 this museum is dedicated to his life and works as a designer. It is a very unique place and a museum that simply can’t exist anywhere else in the world. Worth a visit if you find the topic interesting.

7. Sample the local cuisine

Getaria is an excellent place to indulge in the intricacies of Basque cuisine. There are many great restaurants in town where you can order such meals.

One of the best restaurants that you can visit in Getaria is Restaurante Politena. They have all the local favorites and are an extremely popular place. Make sure that you reserve a table in advance if you want to visit.

Another place that we can recommend is the El Astillero. It’s located at the port and serves fresh seafood. Just the place to get some great fish or try the catch of the day.

How much time to spend in Getaria?

Getaria is absolutely perfect for a day trip. The town itself can be seen in around 2 hours so it’s not a long stop if you are exploring by car.

Climb up the hill and add a restaurant to the itinerary and you can easily extend your stay to 4-5 hours.

If you are planning a multi-day road trip in Basque county then do consider Getaria as one of your sleeping stops. There are many awesome towns in the area and the local beach makes Getaria attractive for a bit of a longer stay.
